In celebration of Valentine’s Day, the Junior Financial Executives (UB-JFINEX) held the “Coin Companions” event on February 14, 2025, at the 3rd floor lobby of Centennial Building. This educational and interactive event creatively related finance with the spirit of Valentine’s Day by encouraging students to match the obverse and reverse of the New Generation Currency Coin Series, thus promoting financial literacy.

Students from the School of Business Administration and Accountancy (SBAA) participated in two main activities designed to deepen their understanding of Philippine coin denominations. The first activity was the matching game, where participants had to identify the correct obverse and reverse sides of current Philippine coins. The second activity involved finding the pairs of old coins and determining which Philippine coin series they belong to, allowing students to appreciate the history and evolution of Philippine’s currency. Students receive sweet treats for every correct answer.

A lot of students returned multiple times to play the game, showing their enthusiasm and commitment to learning.

This event contributed to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In alignment with SDG 4: Quality Education, the SBAA students did not only enhanced their understanding of the current Philippine coin denominations but also developed an appreciation for the history of the country’s currency. Learning about the obverse and reverse sides of coins allowed students to recognize the historical and cultural significance embedded in the currency, providing a deeper connection to our financial system.

Moreover, the practical knowledge gained from this activity directly supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. By familiarizing themselves with coin denominations and their values, students are better equipped to handle financial transactions, budgeting, and savings in their future careers. This foundational financial literacy is crucial for making informed financial decisions, contributing to responsible money management, and ultimately supporting economic growth.

The event definitely combined education, fun, and a touch of sweetness during the Valentine’s Day.
